RSGB UK Activity Contests Final Results 2017

WADARC finished 4th out of 113 affiliated Clubs in the UK !

The 2017 RSGB UKAC evening contests finished off a controversial year with respect to the points system which has once again been changed for 2018 to the Nordic system and called B4.  the Contest also finished with an increase in individual operators from 733 up to 750 !

The Wirral & District Amateur Radio Club finished in 4th Position out of 78 in the General Club Section.  Accepting we finished in 9th position last year, many clubs have been working hard to increase their member participation and in some cases have re-grouped to form other clubs/groups.  Considering we are NOT a Contest Group but a Radio Club, it was another tremendous result, due in no small part to the continued enthusiasm and guidance from Denis G3UVR and Frank G8REQ towards club participants.

In fairness the 750 individual stations who picked up a microphone and made contact with someone else in one of the contests during the year has been a tremendous achievement for the hobby and full marks to them all.

This year WADARC continued to enjoy the added generosity of points from our country member Bob G1ZJP (operating as M1MHZ).  We thank him for every one of those points which helped our position no end.  We are delighted to see his antenna mast and winches have been repaired and he is 'back in business'.  We also enjoyed the company again of Bob and Carole at a D&W Dinner at the Nags Head in Willaston which was a big success.  It would be good if this could become an annual event !  Another recent addition to our country members is Tony G4CBW and we are sure his input in the microwave sections will make a big contribution in 2018.  Welcome on board Tony !

Overall in 2017, Denis G3UVR finished 3rd (with certificate) in the UK, Frank G8REQ and Bob M1MHZ were very close behind at 11th and 16th respectively  out of the 750 taking part .. which were all excellent performances and are all to be congratulated.  Well done men !

During 2017, the greatest increase in activity was seen in the SHF or microwave sections.  Here once again WADARC is up there with the best of them with Denis G3UVR and latterly Frank G8REQ, Tony G4CBW and John G7LLQ all playing their parts as well.  2018 should be interesting !

Congratulations to Denis, Frank, Tony and John for some superb results.

We are primarily a Radio Club, however, the final table shows a summary of each WADARC member who took part together in 2017 with their individual scores for each band they operated.  Many of our members have jobs, families and other interests which make operating every Tuesday/Thursday more difficult than for some.  Also, not everyone has every band available due to limited radio's, antennas and space, but to use a well worn phrase .. "Your contribution is still very important to us" and greatly appreciated.

We hope that there may still be more club members who might be persuaded to join us in 2018 ? and certainly there have been murmurings of station improvements including new radio's, higher masts, better antennas and coax etc !! so fingers crossed for another good result again in 2018.

If you are thinking you might like to join in for the 2˝ hours on a Tuesday/Thursday evening - even if it is only for the 144MHz contest .. but would like more information on any details of the activity .. please do ask anyone of us shown in the list at either a club meeting or a Drink & Waffle as we would all be only too pleased to share our experiences and enjoyment with you and help get you started.

Finally .. a BIG thank you to everyone who has helped us achieve such good results and put our Club firmly on the UKAC Contest map in 2017.

Roll on 2018 .. no doubt it will be another challenging year thanks to another new scoring system !!
