Wirral & District Amateur Radio Club

RSGB UK Activity Contests Final Results 2018

WADARC finished 5th out of 118 affiliated Clubs in the UK !

The 2018 RSGB UKAC evening contests ended a much less controversial year with respect to the points system and while nothing can ever be perfect, there was much more agreement on the rules and allocation of bonus points.  Total individual operators were slightly down from 750 to 732.

The Wirral & District Amateur Radio Club finished in 5th Position out of 83 clubs in the General Club Section.  A very creditable position considering we are not a contest group but an enthusiastic Radio Club.  It was another tremendous result, due in no small part to the continued enthusiasm and guidance from Denis G3UVR and Frank G8REQ.

Once again, WADARC continued to enjoy the added generosity of points from our country member Bob G1ZJP (operating as M1MHZ).  We thank him for every one of those points which helped our position no end.

Overall in 2018, Denis G3UVR finished 6th in the UK, Bob M1MHZ was 11th closely followed by Frank G8REQ 32nd out of the 732 stations taking part .. which were all excellent performances and are all to be congratulated.  Well done men !

Important to remember is that the above three are no good on their own and it's each and every point spread over a group of stations which helps to pull us into the top group so a big "Well Done" to Neil M0WBG, George M0HWO, Tom G4BKF, our New member Paul GW0MDQ and John G7LLQ.

Once again in 2018, the greatest increase in activity was seen in the SHF or microwave sections.  Here once again WADARC is up there with the best of them with Denis G3UVR and latterly Frank G8REQ and John G7LLQ all playing their parts as well.

2019 should be interesting as we welcome Paul GW0MDQ into the fold.  A contester since gaining his licence many years ago he used to support many of WADARC's VHF activity /P in North Wales and we wish him lots of fun and points joining us in the UKAC.

Congratulations again to Denis who achieved "Runner-Up, Restricted Section" .. winning top spot (1000 Points) on three separate months .. another great result, see charts below (Top 10 only 52 participating)  :-

The final table shows a summary of each WADARC member who took part in 2018 with their individual scores for each band they operated on.  As mentioned, we are primarily a Radio Club and many of our members have jobs, families and other interests which make operating every Tuesday/Thursday plus attending Club Meetings on a Wednesday as well, requiring considerable family diplomacy.  This makes their contribution to completing as many monthly events as possible so appreciated.  Not everyone has every band available due to limited radio's and antennas, but to use a well worn phrase .. "Each operator's contribution is still very important to us".  A BIG thank you to you and your families.

We hope that there may still be more club members who might be persuaded to join us in 2019 ? and certainly there have been murmurings of station improvements including new radio's, higher masts, better antennas and coax etc !! so fingers crossed for another good result again in 2019.

If, after reading this .. you think you might like to join in for the 2˝ hours on a Tuesday/Thursday evening - even if it is only for the 144MHz contest .. but would like more information on any details of the activity .. please do ask anyone of us shown in the list at either a club meeting or a Drink & Waffle as we would all be only too pleased to share our experiences and enjoyment with you and help get you started.

Roll on 2019 .. no doubt it will be another challenging year.

Neil G4OAR
